Babysitting – a guide for sitters

Babysitting while a parent goes out for a few hours can be a good way for young people to earn some extra income. While it can be fun, rewarding and an invaluable experience, it also demands a sensible, flexible and mature outlook, as you will be responsible for the child’s safety and wellbeing. This factsheet answers some of the more common questions about babysitting and offers some tips to help you make a good job of it.

It is always best to arrange to meet the children you will be looking after well before the first time you babysit. On the night, try and arrive 10 or 15 minutes before the parents are due to leave. This will give you plenty of time to run through what’s expected, such as the bedtime routine and bathing etc. Before the parents leave, make sure that you have agreed what time they expect to return home and how you will then get home. You will also need to know the following contact information:

Infants: An infant under a year likes to throw, hold, drop, tear, grab and roll. Rattles and bright toys that have different textures and sounds are often good sources of entertainment. So are children’s songs and music.

Infants may try and put everything in their mouths, so watch for small objects. If you are asked to bath a small child, remember they are vulnerable in even a few inches of water and can drown easily. Also, don’t take your eyes off them if they have to be placed on any raised surface – a bed or high chair, even for a second, as they may roll, or fall.

The amount that you charge for babysitting will depend on several factors including your age and experience, how many children you will have to look after, whether it will be later than midnight and, finally, what the going rate is in your area. Ask friends who babysit what they are paid so that you can get a fair idea. Once the child’s parents have asked you to babysit for them, it is a good idea to agree rates of payment at that stage. That way, there is less chance of any misunderstanding later on.

If you have followed the advice contained in this leaflet, it is unlikely that parents will be unhappy with your care. However, if this does happen, calmly ask them to give an explanation for the way they feel. Write down what they say so that you can remember later.

Childcare/babysitters – Choosing and Using Child Care

Child care is more than a service that allows parents to work. It is a world that is bound to affect a child’s development in many ways – physically, emotionally, intellectually, and socially.

According to the U.S Department of Health and Human Services, finding quality child care that is affordable can be challenging. Many parents need inexpensive or cost-free day care where they know their children are safe and are being helped to grow and develop. Parents can now contact their local social service agency (listed in the phone book) for information about government-sponsored programs such as Head Start and Early Head Start and other community programs.

The National Women’s Health Information Center (NWHIC) also recommends taking the following steps to choosing quality child care.

Steps to Choosing Quality Child Care:

• Look. Visit several child care homes or centers. Visit the home or center more than once and stay as long as possible so you can get a good feel for what the care will be like for your child. Continue to visit even after you start using the home or center.

• Listen. Make sure the place is cheerful and not too quiet, which can mean not enough activity. Happy-sounding children mean they are involved and busy.

• Count. Count the number of children in the group and the number of staff members caring for them. The fewer the number of children for each staff member, the more attention your child will get.

• Ask. Adults who care for children need knowledge and experience. Ask about the background and experience of all staff that will have contact with your child in the home or center.

• Be Informed. Find out more about efforts in your community to improve the quality of child care. Ask if the home or center is involved in these activities. Consider getting involved you.

Child Care Development: What All Carers Should Know

The environment that a child grows up in is a very important element in his development. As longer hours are spent by children in child care facilities, it is important for administrators of these centers to be more diligent in looking into their programs for child care development.
Essential to a child’s development are the approaches that a facility takes in his learning. Aside from the physical factors crucial to his progress, the child must also be emotionally, intellectually, and socially stimulated.
What types of development should be nurtured in child care centers?
Child care development comes in various forms. One is social development, to which child care facilities may greatly contribute if well-planned activities are properly implemented. When a child is in a day care center, for instance, he is constantly around other children, with whom he plays, works, and eats.
The child also learns how to deal with s – in this case teachers, volunteers, or caregivers who need to be well-trained in child care development. When these professionals show care and concern for their wards, the children react positively and would enjoy their stay in child care facilities more.
Child care development in these facilities also comes in the form of emotional maturity. As children interact with kids of various cultural, ethnic, social, and economic backgrounds, they obtain a deeper understanding of diversity and tolerance for others.
Another form of child care development that can be nurtured are language skills. Even toddlers learn a lot by uttering seemingly nonsensical words, as these are the first steps to language development. Children also take to singing naturally, which also helps in their linguistic learning.
Physical activities, a necessary program in almost all child care facilities, contribute to child care development in a variety of ways. Motor skills, both fine and gross, are enhanced via free play, playground time, and individual work such as painting and playing with puzzles.
Moreover, child care development is at its best when the facility also offers feeding programs. Balanced diets are essential for child care development because kids need proper nutrition in order to progress optimally. When they are given nutritious food, they learn better and are less irritable or hyperactive.
There are many instances when child care development is not easily detected at first, but is manifested in the long term. When there are enough activities to stimulate children’s creativity and interactive skills, we can say that the facility satisfactorily fulfills its role in child care development.
When we speak of outdoor gates, we refer to the security of the center’s perimeter itself. Even during outdoor play, the children must not be able to open the main gates by themselves and possibly venture out into the street. Indoor gates refer to the contraptions attached to staircases and other areas of the house or establishment where access to them may pose dangers to the children.
For the child’s safety, all staircases must be blocked by a safety gate which no child should be able to open without assistance from an . In the same vein, washrooms and toilets must have all the features necessary for it to be child-friendly – that is, toilet seats must be at levels accessible for kids; there should be no bathtubs which could pose dangers to toddlers; and sinks must be within their reach.

The Child Care Maze – Making the Right Choice for Your Child

One of the most challenging times of parenthood is finding the right child care for your little one. This is no easy task and puts many a parent in a stressed-out state. It can also be an extremely expensive endeavor should you go through an agency or paid service.

These days there are three main options for Child Care:

Stay-at-home Mom/DadThe most obvious is of course one parent staying at home and taking care of your child yourself. This is by far the most rewarding and arguably best option as most people would say that no one can truly substitute for a parent’s care. However, sadly nowadays, this option is becoming less and less viable for the average working family. Thus, we consider our next best options.

Hiring a Nanny / BabysitterHiring a Nanny to care for your child is a very popular choice these days. There are many advantages to hiring a nanny such as greater one-to-one care and having your child stay in an environment she is already familiar and comfortable with; your home.

When hiring a Nanny there are many things to consider: Should I hire locally or sponsor one from abroad? Should I hire a nanny to live-in or live-out? Sponsoring a Nanny from abroad usually means the Nanny is more likely to stay with you for the longer term and will typically work for a lower salary. However, hiring locally is often less hassle and allows you to meet the Nanny ahead of time and be sure she is the right one for your family. A live-in nanny will typically cost you less since her accommodation costs are taken into account in her salary though having someone living with your family is a very personal choice and certainly not for everyone.

DaycareAnother popular option is putting your child in the hands of child care professionals at a certified daycare center. The number of daycares in recent years has been growing rapidly, though not fast enough for most parents. The main advantage of a certified daycare center is that your child will be in an environment that is regulated and required to be of certain standards. Your child will also be with a number of other children where she can play and make friends.

An alternative to the traditional daycare center is a home daycare. A home daycare is a smaller daycare typically operated out of someone’s home, often by another mom or dad. Home daycares have some advantages over a daycare center in that they have a smaller number of children in a home-like atmosphere. This often allows children to have a better chance at bonding with each other as well as the child care provider.

Making the “right” choiceFinding the right child care for your child can be a daunting task. As with most things there is no right choice for everyone but there is a right choice for you and your child. Researching all of your options, speaking with other parents, knowing your child, and using your own parental intuition will assuredly aid you in your search for the best child care for your precious one.

After and Before School Care

After School and parent and children relationship

Every human being has their own opinion and own way of thinking it also applies to parent and child’s relationships. There are situations where parent and child fighting arguing and child showing reaction to displace are carried forward to elementary school years as per research many new issues developed as early as age seven. Some of these issues are related to school, discipline and autonomy, being home alone also according to some children, parent’s mental problems. School related problem pops up during late and middle childhood years. Schools related problem are one reason that children that in this age group are referred for clinical help. In school children starts to get exposed to social interaction and social comparison. Which can be taxing to children who are shy or unable to cope up with the speed? Moreover, children face moral values at school which is different from what they have learned at home. This can create confusion to child’s mind. It was found that displace children in middle and late childhood is easier than it was during early childhood. During this time, children’s cognitive development has matured to the extent that it is possible for the parents to reason with them. The major shift to autonomy doers not occur until about the age of1 2 or later.Parent’s need to put lot of time with the children, even though present socio economic condition force mom and dad to go to work everyday and when children comes home parents are still at work. Children’s 2 to 4 hours stayed home unsupervised also during the summer months, they might be unsupervised for entire days, week or months, and with the situation many children have had negative experiences. Some may grow up fast, hurried by the responsibilities placed on them. Without limits and parental supervision, some children also find their way into trouble, stealing, vandalizing or abusing a sibling.

From the children’s earlier years we further consider three salient developmental issues nature and nurture, continuity and discontinuity ,and stability and the change, it is important to pint out that most life-span develop mentalists recognize that extreme positions on these issues are unwise. Development is not not not not not not nature or nurture, continuity or discontinuity nor is it all stability or all change, it is all characteristic of human development.  For instance, an individual’s cognitive development is the result of heredity- environment interaction, not heredity or environment alone. Culture and historical factors permeate all aspects of life-span development. There is couple of things to consider changes in individual’s physical nature, thoughts, intelligence and language, individual’s relationship with other people, emotions and personality. Now when kids are home alone during summer and after and before school unsupervised we have no way to know what are they doing? During the time and what is in their mind and how they reacting to those thoughts. Staying home alone or not getting enough attention from parent’s cause’s emotional imbalance in the kids. Both parents are working and time is very limited and situation overlooked during the children’s development. Many children goes to after and before school care so during that time they will be busy with activities and that helps kids.

Cough Medicines and Children

Starting in 2007, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) began a campaign against the use of cough medicines for children. In February of 2009, they issued FDA Patient Safety News: Show #83 entitled ‘New Labels for Non-prescription Cough and Cold Medicines.’ They advise parents not to administer medicine to children that is labeled for adults. The directive contains other warnings for parents such as the importance of reading and understanding the label that gives the dosage and time for administering it. All of these actions were prompted by the fact that children have become ill as a result of improper dosage.
The FDA is also concerned about the use of cough medicines by children without parental knowledge or consent. Some over the counter cough suppressants contain dextromethorphan or DXM. While DXM is safe when taken in the recommended fifteen to thirty milligram dose, when taken in large quantities as abusers do, it can result in a quick buzz. But it is also dangerous with many side effects such as impaired judgment, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, irregular heartbeat, seizures, and brain damage.
These medications do not cure a cold they merely relieve the symptoms. They don’t even reduce the amount of time the child is ill.
Prescription medications are always accompanied by a fact sheet from the pharmacist stating directions for using, and noting any possible side effects. Plus the pharmacist will usually explain all of this information to the person picking up the prescription.
While over the counter medications contain the same information, consumers are not as likely to read it. And this is important when administering medication to a child. The parent should at least read and understand the basics such as how much to administer this, when to give it and how often it can be given. Parents should also pay attention to whether it should be given before eating, after eating, with food, with water or without. It is important to read about side effects so that you can recognize them if they should occur.
Parents are also advised to keep a written log stating the medicine or medicines being administered, the amount of each dose and the time it was given. If it becomes necessary to take the child to a doctor or to a hospital, the log should be taken along for the doctor to see. When medicating children there are some crucial do’s and don’ts. Don’t give medicine to a child under four years of age without a doctor’s permission. Don’t give or allow anyone else to give aspirin to a child under eighteen years of age. Aspirin can trigger Reyes Syndrome, a serious condition that can result in seizures, brain damage and death. Do be sure to educate children on the importance of this. Don’t give adult medications to children. Medicine affects children’s systems differently than adults. All headache, fever, and cold medicines are available in products formulated especially for children. Don’t administer both prescription and over-the-counter remedies without your doctor’s knowledge. And finally, clean out your medicine cabinet and get rid of anything past the expiry date.
